Thirty is a strange age.

For one, you’re technically a full-grown adult in the eyes of the world. You can’t get away with excuses about being “immature for your age” or “just enjoying your twenties”.

Secondly, it’s an age where you can look in the mirror and simultaneously discover a brand new zit and a wrinkle.

Fabulous.

I was the lucky recipient of all of the above when I dared look in the mirror earlier this evening. A lovely little eye wrinkle and a shiny pink pimple on my chin. To make things abundantly worse, my makeup bag apparently didn’t make the trip with us, and is likely hanging out in a gray security scanner bin at ATL. Merde. My straightener, also, is sadly sitting forgotten in my bathroom at home.

Talk about fresh out of luck.

After these terrifying discoveries, I seriously considered popping outside and swimming back to Atlanta (can’t be that far, right?). Or, finding a couple friendly dolphins to hitch a ride with.

Having Aiden see me all frizzy, pimply, and wrinkly was just about the worst thing I could imagine. And now, in the span of a week, he’s seen me gross, sweaty and sans makeup twice.

Sacré freaking bleu.

I talked myself out of my little spiral of despair and pep talked myself into not caring what Aiden might think.

When we met for dinner, he actually had the audacity to say that I looked great.

Great.

With no trace of sarcasm. What’s his angle?

Since we got here a few hours ago, things have been… confusing, to say the least. He’s been, in turn, hot and cold and flirty and maddening and nice. Plus, somehow, in this island paradise setting, he looks more handsome than ever. Which I can’t say I’m a fan of.

After he rudely tricked me into holding his hand for the second time today—then proceeded to pull me into the ocean as his idea of a brilliant prank—I fled the bungalow. Spent the afternoon on the beach, reading my book and getting lost in a real love story.

But now, evening has come and I’m back to living my fake one. With a fake boyfriend I can’t stand.

One who I may or may not have just told that I have a thing for Santa Claus beards. I don’t know why I said that, it was the first thing that came to mind. Which, to be honest, should have been my warning signal to not open my mouth.

Silly me.

Now, after our fantastically stimulating and witty (not) conversation about my (completely made up) love of bushy beards, we arrive at the beach to find a welcome committee.

“Miss Shaw, Mr. Turner!” Blaze booms.

“Other way around,” I tell him. “It’s Mr. Shaw and Miss Turner.”

He frowns at me like he has no idea what I’m talking about. “That’s what I said.”

Beside me, Aiden chuckles. Jerk.

Instead of bothering to correct Blaze—who’s probably in the throes of some magic mushroom trip or something—I elbow Aiden in the ribs. Which is very satisfying for a moment. Until he responds by daring
